Gustav Mahler’s Heavenly Retreats: special places for composition

March 25th, 2008 at 10:22 pm

It is something of a paradox to me that, despite my involvement in a series of architectural projects- big and small, and my involvement in architectural education (some 3000 students) it is the spiritual and magical properties of Mahler’s Huts, his ‘Composing Houses’ or summer retreats that has been a special source of inspiration to me. It should not be underestimated that the unique associations I have had with other Mahler enthusiasts, music scholars and alike have also made this project probably the most compelling investigation of my professional life. So too do I have very special memories of walking into the Cottage at Steinbach where Mahler created the end of his Second and his Third Symphony in its entirety. It was truly ‘jaw dropping’- never to be forgotten; a profoundly emotional experience.

I now welcome other contributions from other Mahler/music lovers to share with me their special memories of visiting one, (or all three) of Mahler’s special places for composition. Come on Mahler lovers- I look forward to hearing from you!

Kind Regards,

Keith
